An old man died. One year later, almost on his death anniversary, his widow passed away. I find no irony in this. It happens quite often.

"If you mess with us, this fellow will beat the crap out of all of you." I must confess these were the first words I uttered when an Union platoon intercepted our coach on our way to Prague, confiscated our belongings, and took me and my comrade Ciaran O'Dell S. J. as hostages. That happened on May 25th, 1648; six days later we literally slashed our way out of the enemy garrison. It took us four days to make it to the city--a gipsy caravan helped us. Saint George, in the end, aided us and we could defend Karlsbrücke. He has never forsaken us. Ciaran unfortunately lost his left eye; my right ear is half deaf--a Swede shot his blunderbuss quite near of my head. I could but stumble away as I saw how he became a casualty of our artillery division. He got the worst part of all, I guess. Back then we never took cripples as prisoners, for they never made it. Thence the famous and merciful coup de grâce was our best way to redeem ourselves.
